Submitting Data to WDCA
The WDCA collects and archives data on aerosol properties from global and regional stations connected to the GAW atmospheric observatory network, but also from other contributing stations. Essentially, all stations where the measurements meet the quality standards defined by the GAW aerosol scientific advisory group are invited to contribute their data. Data providers benefit from the improved data dissemination through WDCA with an increased number of collaborations. GAW's strict data policy ensures that the data provider's interests are appreciated.
Data submitted to WDCA needs to meet well-defined format standards. WDCA's primary data format, called EBAS NASA-Ames, is based on the NASA-Ames 1001 format, but contains additional specifications ensuring data traceability. Data providers accustomed to the NARSTO format previously used by the WDCA for regular, annual reporting may continue to submit their data in that format.
WDCA currently supports two modes of data reporting: 1) regular, usually annual data reporting; 2) near-real-time data reporting. This site section contains general format examples with line-by-line instructions for both reporting modes. For each parameter or instrument supported by a reporting mode, a specific format example is also available (or will be soon).
Stations who submit data to the WDCA for the first time need to register with the GAW Station Information System (GAWSIS) for obtaining their GAW station ID by filling out a form. They should also send an e-mail to ebas@nilu.no for obtaining their station and platform codes.
1) Regular, Annual Data Reporting
Regular data reporting is the most common form of submitting data to WDCA. Data are reported at least annually, but may also be reported semi- or quarter-annually. The primary data format is EBAS NASA-Ames, but data in NARSTO format are also accepted. The properly formatted data files are uploaded to the anonymous ftp-server
To prevent abuse of this server, it is configured in "blind-drop" mode. It accepts uploads only and ignores directory requests, i.e. you won't be able to see the files you just uploaded, and you won't be able to delete them once they are uploaded. If you uploaded a file in error, please send an e-mail to ebas@nilu.no and specify the details.
2) Near-Real-Time Data Reporting
The WMO community is currently moving quickly towards near-real-time (NRT) data dissemination, also for atmospheric parameters that require more sophisticated handling than standard meteorological variables. This is part of implementing the WMO Information System (WIS), WMO's data dissemination infrastructure for the 21st century. As a pilot project towards this goal, WDCA has adopted a NRT data collection, processing, and dissemination infrastructure for advanced aerosol parameters developed by the European Commission funded project European Supersites for Atmospheric Aerosol Research (EUSAAR).
Data submitted in NRT may only be used for applications naturally requiring this feature. Data submitted in NRT must not be used for publications.
Only selected instrument types are currently supported by the NRT system. New participating stations in the NRT pilot project are welcome! If you are interested in participating in the pilot project, please contact the project manager (Markus.Fiebig@nilu.no).
